From Women Aviators

The first women who served as pilots in the United States military during World War II were WAFS - Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron. They would be in existence for about a year before being folded into the WASP. 25 women in all served as WAFS, including Helen Harkness Love, the founder of the WAFS.
